There was no town of
our country that would not be involved into the events of the Great Patriotic
War. In spite of the fact that the line was situated far from Stavropol , the town was also abided by the
requirements of the war time.
On the first days of
war the leavers of the secondary school headed by Fyodor Larin, the secretary of the committee of the Young Communist League,
made up their mind to defend the native land from the enemy, too. About 50
young men left for the line, and just 12 of them came back. 19 inhabitants of Stavropol were honoured with states of Heroes of the Soviet Union. I. Buzytskov who held defence of the bridge across the river Prut during the first days of the war got
7 injuries and was assigned Hero of the Soviet Union of the Kuibyshev region.
Another inhabitant of
the Stavropol district Eugene Nikonov achieved exploits in August 1941. When
Nikonov was made prisoner of war, he revealed such a tremendous courage and
constancy, which got Fascists fly into a rage and they burnt him alive.
After the collapse of
the USSR there was no place in the Tallinn Park of
Cadriorg to bury the remains of the heroes. Only thank to the inhabitants of Togliatty, who had collected money, the
soldiers’ remains were removed to the village of Vasilievka of the Stavropol district and buried there.
The inhabitants of Stavropol that were honoured
with state of Hero of the Soviet Union are: I.D. Buzytskov, E.A. Nikonov, A.I.
Grachyov, D.N. Golosov, A.L. Kazachkov, K.N. Viktorov, P.V. Lapshov, V.P.
Kudashov, S.M. Fadeev, V.D. Andrianov, V.I. Zhilin, B. Neryashev, A.V.
Golodnov.
Viktor Nosov repeated the exploit that N. Gastello had achieved.
The leaver of the Stavropol school Valentine Stupina was the navigator of the female aviation regiment
commanded by M. Raskova.
During the war time
there was a great problem with fuel. Petroleum exploitations taken in Baku were exposed to threat. The first
Devonian oil of industrial measure in the USSR was unearthed on the drill station
of the trust “ Stavropol oil” in June 1944.
The complete industry
of Stavropol that was not so large worked for
the line. Small plants of agricultural techniques repairing and working of the
production of fishing collective farms, district industrial complexes with
saw-mill, the company “Dawn” with corporations of clothes and shoe making,
leather and sheep skin working operated in Stavropol during the years of war. Besides, a
school for teaching hospital nurses and 2 infant homes for evacuated children
were started in the town.
In October 1941 the
Military Department of the second Moscow pedagogical institute, where people
were taught a profession of military interpreter, was evacuated out of Moscow. All the students and tutors were
setted in sanatorium “Woody”. In April 1942 the Military Department was
reformed into the Red Army Military Institute of Foreign Languages. 28
languages were taught there. Such famous people as P.G. Pustovoit, B. Atush, A. Ashpei, E. Rzhevskaya, E. Levin and P. Kogan had graduated from the
institute.
